What a way to start off our El Tiny series’ second annual season! Omar Apollo opens Latinx Heritage Month with a performance of “En El Olvido” with a full band and Las Mariachis Lindas, drawing inspiration from his early years listening to Juan Gabriel.

It’s not a Mexican party, according to Alt.Latino co-host Anamaria Sayre, until someone starts sobbing. Apollo welcomes esta melancola as the band transitions into the breezy Randamp;B song “Evergreen.” He smiles to the throng and warns them that things are going to become worse.
Despite the songs about heartbreak and unrequited love, the performers in this Tiny Desk performance seem at peace with one another as they sing “Evergreen” and “Petrified” before concluding with the (slightly) happier “Endlessly.” The heart may be aching, but in a supportive environment, the suffering never seems insurmountable.
As Apollo’s Tiny Desk comes to a close, he gives the audience a self-improvement homework assignment for leaving the bad behind you and being available to take part in community building: He says, “I want y’all to think about something.” “I want you to go home, do meditation, and destroy the bridge,” the speaker said. He chuckles. “I’m having fun!” However, as seen by his and the band’s contagious energy, there is only room for edifying one another in Omar Apollo’s universe.
