I’m a travel author who has visited each of the 50 states. Here are the seven that, in my opinion, are overrated.

Every state is worthwhile to visit, but for me, some of them haven’t quite lived up to the hype.

I went to my 50th state when I was 13 years old, and I’ve been back to every one since.
I’ve had memories and adventures all throughout the US, whether on vacations with friends and family, in my work as a travel writer, or both.

Additionally, although while I genuinely believe that there is no poor state to visit, I do think that there are some that receive excessive amounts of publicity that they may not quite merit. I’m happy to name a few of these states.

Remember that being on this list implies that your state is known for being a very wonderful destination to visit, something that other states, including my own cherished home state of New Jersey, would envy.

And because all travel is subjective, I reserve the right to fall in and out of love with each state as I go back and forth between them.
