HBO The Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon had close to 10 million viewers on Sunday, making it the most watched series debut in HBO and HBO Max history, according to the network.

The series had more than 2 million Google searches on Sunday, making it the top trending subject on Twitter.
Nielsen’s ratings for cable-only programming won’t be available until Tuesday.

The fact that so many ‘Game of Thrones’ fans joined us in Westeros last night was great, according to Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max. “‘House of the Dragon’ boasts an extraordinarily brilliant cast and crew who gave their all to the project, and we’re over the moon with the great reception from fans,” the producers said.

The events of the precursor to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, take place approximately 200 years earlier. It chronicles the tale of the House of Targaryen and is based on the George R.R. Martin book Fire andamp; Blood.

Game of Thrones achieved its greatest weekly audience on HBO Max the week before the debut of House of the Dragon.
