On Monday evening, a family of four phoned the police after following an SUV that they claimed had been driving “erratically” before turning off the road on Highway 281.

The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office stated in an press release. that a man who appeared to be Dowen Jones, the mayor of Rufus, Oregon, a town with a population of less than 300 , stepped out of the passenger side of the vehicle and fired at them as they slowed down and passed the car “to get a description of the suspect vehicle for the purpose of reporting the erratic driving to the Sheriff’s Office.”

No bullets were fired at the family, who included a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old, during the incident.
Tuesday saw the arrest of Jones by the authorities. He faces four counts of first-degree attempted assault and one count of attempted murder.
The inquiry is being conducted by the Dalles Police Department and the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office.

He will show up in court on November 10, NBC News reported and is being jailed on a $100,000 bail.

Jones won the election in 2018 with 76 votes, while the other contenders only received four. He worked as an electrician and a photographer before becoming mayor, according to the source.
