Following the departure of cops who cited post-traumatic stress disorder related to the 2020 incident, the department has been cut in size by nearly a third. Following several years of growing homicide and serious assault rates, Floyd was killed.

City authorities recently held a session at the Minneapolis Police Academy with only six attendees in an effort to persuade more people to join the department.

During the panel, Sgt. Vanessa Anderson reportedly said to prospective recruiters, “There are still individuals who value us.” “The neighborhood still values us.” I genuinely believe that.

According to the AP, only 57 applicants for officer positions submitted applications in 2022 as opposed to 292 in 2019. There can be up to 40 recruits in each class at the police academy, but only six were in the class that graduated last month.

You can shout, “Hire more people!” as loud as you want, but if fewer people are applying, it won’t make much of a difference,” Garrett Parten, a police spokesperson, told The AP. “Recruitment has turned into a problem across the nation. Simply put, fewer people are applying for the position.

In the summer after Floyd’s death, racial justice demonstrations broke out not only in Minneapolis but also around the nation in an effort to solve structural problems inside police departments or reconsider their spending plans. The city of Minneapolis has awarded more than $700,000 to resolve separate settlements for charges of unjustified and excessive force, according to T he Star Tribune . Some demonstrators filed complaints against police for their conduct during the protests.

According to The AP, Floyd’s death created mistrust between the police and communities of color, especially Black residents. One of the panelists at the Minneapolis Police Academy was 36-year-old mixed-race Cyrus Collins.

Collins, who has an obscenity against cops tattooed on his face, told The AP he wanted to join to make a statement.

Collins stated, “I don’t want people of color to be against officers.” What profession would be better suited to convey that message than that of a Minneapolis police officer?
